You can apply a filter, an adjustment, change the blending options, or crop an object to a layer, but you can never change a layer's name because changing the name changes the original version of the image. To do so requires the original file; thus, unless you have the original, you need the name when you need it. In this book, I use the term "layer" for referring to both named and unnamed layers. Masking layers A layer mask is an invisible checkerboard-like image with one visible side. It represents a layer that is covered or masked. The process of placing a layer over another layer is referred to as masking the layer. A layer mask can be created by clicking on a layer and using the Create Layer Mask option.
